Officials from Turkey take English language classes

Southern University is hosting about 11 visiting faculty and administrators from Kirikkale University in Turkey. They are living on campus and will be here until July 31 participating in the English Language Training Program.

The guests are part of an exchange program and partnership the university has with five universities in Turkey. The partnership is an effort to provide English education and to eventually have students from Turkey to attend Southern.

The ELTP is a means of getting the Turkish faculty more comfortable with the English language, said Dr. Barbara Carpenter, dean of International Education. “It is a means of merging them into the culture here.”

The effort to increase the partnership with educational institutions in Turkey has been encouraged by Chancellor Dr. James L. Llorens.  He has lead two delegations from the Baton Rouge campus to meetings in Turkey discussing the idea of student and faculty exchanges.

Likewise, a delegation from Turkey has visited SUBR to tour the campus and to negotiate education ties between the two groups. There is a strong possibility that some students from Turkey will be enrolling at SUBR in the fall of this year.
