Southern University’s Hospitality Trumps Other Colleges

Baton Rouge, La. - Sacramento native, Kendall Banks, left the Golden State to attend Southern University this fall, after touring the campus for the first time.  

With acceptance letters from Louisiana State University, the University of Oregon and the University of Nevada, Reno, to name a few, Southern University rose to the top of Kendall's list for its hospitality and career opportunities.

"I chose Southern because it was a different atmosphere than what I was used to," Kendall said. "The people around here are all extremely nice. They had a lot of unique opportunities outside of college, and post-college, that I was really interested in doing. They had a lot of connections that I could do for interning; and I just like the history behind the school, with it being a historically black college. I thought it was a really unique opportunity."

Kendall's parents, Kevin and Regina Banks, were pleased with their son's decision, even though he would be moving over 1,800 miles away.

"Being that far away, I was very leery about my son leaving California," said Mrs. Banks, "to come all the away to Louisiana after one visit, but I felt really comfortable on campus." "I feel whatever college he goes to he would be far enough away that I'd have to go see him, but I think here he felt a connection. I think that connection was a great tour that he received from Dr. Rene..."

Mrs. Banks was referring to Southern University's Academic Recruiter, Dr. Robert Rene.

Mr. and Mrs. Banks were also thrilled to view Southern's campus and believed it was the perfect size for their son to feel at home.  

"I was very excited about his decision," Mr. Banks said. "I thought the college was large enough for him to grow but still small enough for him to feel apart of something."

Kendall graduated from Antelope High School, named after the town 25 minutes outside of Sacramento, with aspirations of pursuing a career in mechanical engineering. He is looking forward to many opportunities affiliated with Southern University's Mechanical Engineering program.
