Southern University student wins national college media award

Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR) student Don Green, won the "Photo Shoot-out" competition in the "Best of Show" contest to earn a David L. Adams Apple Award at the national College Media Association's (CMA) convention held in New York City, March 12-15, 2016.

For the second consecutive year, the SUBR Office of Student Media has earned the national award at the CMA's annual meeting.

Green, a junior social work major from Baton Rouge, is a photographer for the SUBR Office of Student Media, contributing to the student newspaper (The Southern DIGEST), magazine (Ego), and yearbook (The Jaguar).

Green says that his camera is his tool for helping people.

"I am thankful for the opportunity to represent Southern University in a competition against schools from across the country. I am humbled that SU believes in my gift of photography," Green said.

Green was among a group of 10 SUBR students that traveled to New York for the convention.

"I am grateful for the judges from across the country that were able to appreciate my vision, and for my parents, Bella and Isreal Green, whom I love so much," Green said.

The David L. Adams Apple Awards are given at the annual CMA Spring Conference. The awards are named in honor David L. Adams, a longtime College Media Advisers stalwart and adviser at Indiana University, who died in 2007.

The Office of Student Media serves as a forum for student expressions and as laboratories for training in journalism. A learning and working environment that fosters the development of students' skills in journalism, leadership and time management, human relations, teamwork, and fiscal responsibility in a product-oriented organizational setting that allows for high levels of interaction, cooperation and collaboration.

"We are so elated that Mr. Green had the opportunity to represent Southern University in such a positive way. In the Office of Student Media, we promote enthusiasm, motivation and most of all productivity. It's truly a joy to see our student staffers excel at such high levels and for that we show gratitude to them for the excellent work that they do not only while at conference, but each week within the office," said Jermaine Proshee, adviser and graphics and publications manager.

Last year, the SUBR student magazine won an Apple award for "Best Magazine Spread."

"Our students show extreme dedication and commitment to their crafts on a daily basis. It is especially rewarding to see their work being selected nationally amongst their peers. We are pleased that we can give them the opportunity to hone their skills and display them on a national stage," said Heather Freeman, director of Office of Student Media.
