Research conducted at SU wins at La. science competition

Research conducted at Southern University won first place recently at a statewide science competition.

Christopher Schayer won first place for his student poster presentation at the Louisiana Alliance for Simulation-Guided Materials Applications (LASiGMA) Louisiana EPSCoR RII 2015 Symposium.

The symposium featured poster presentations by LASiGMA Investigators, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate and undergraduate students. LASiGMA is a collaboration of seven institutions, including Southern in Baton Rouge. It is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Louisiana Board of Regents.

Schayer, an LSU computer science student, won first place for his presentation, "Investigation of Structural, Electron Transport, and Microwave Absorption Properties of La_0.4(Sr_0.4/Ca_0.2)MnO₃." Team member, Hyeyon Kim, from Vanderbilt University assisted on the project.

Their research supervisor was Dr. Laurence Henry in the SU Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Science and Mathematics Education. Dr. Diola Bagayoko, was the principal investigator of the LASiGMA at SUBR. Bagayoko is the SU System Distinguished Professor of Physics.

Other presenters from the Research Experiences for Undergraduates group at SU who made presentations on new scientific findings developed at Southern, included Daneisha Blair from Southern, Joshua Ziegler from Case Western Reserve University, Daniel Polin from New York University, Robert Stewart from the University of Akron and Jerry Martinez from Pomona College.

The Louisiana schools involved with LASiGMA include, Southern, LSU, Grambling State University, Xavier University, Tulane University, Louisiana Tech University and the University of New Orleans.
