SU researchers part of $20 million National Science Foundation grant
BATON ROUGE, La - Southern University is a part of a consortium of Louisiana colleges that recently received a grant totaling $20 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Southern received $1.7 million in a research consortium that includes Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech University, Grambling State University and the University of New Orleans.
The $20 million grant will establish the "Consortium for Innovation in Manufacturing and Materials," according to a Louisiana Board of Regents press release announcing the awarding of the grant.
"This significant NSF award contributes directly to the higher education goals we have set for the state," said Dr. Joseph C. Rallo, Commissioner of Higher Education. "It is particularly noteworthy that our institutions and the business community are partnering in initiatives critical to the future economic well-being of Louisiana."
"The 5-year Research Infrastructure Improvement Track-1 award from the NSF's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) will have tremendous impact on the state, launching the next level of research and development for the materials and advanced manufacturing industries," the Regents press release said.
Mechanical Engineering Professor, Dr. Guoqiang Li, the leader of SU's team who received the NSF grant, said, "The SU team plays an important role in both research and education in this project." Li is the Contractors Educational Trust Fund Endowed Professor in mechanical engineering.
Li is the overall co-Pl and subcontractor of the project. The rest of the team includes: Dr. Shizhong Yang, from computer science; Dr. Patrick Mensah, mechanical engineering; Dr. Samuel Ibekwe, mechanical engineering; Dr. H. Dwayne Jerro, mechanical engineering; Dr. Ebrahim Khosravi, computer science; and Dr. Ghanashyam Joshi, mechanical engineering.
In all, Southern University will receive $1,714,957.00 over a 5-year period, beginning this month.
According to Li, here is Southern's role in the research:
"In research aspect, the SU team will be involved in Science and Technology Thrust 1 (STT1): Multi-scale forming and replication, including Focus1: Interface engineering and coatings applied to forming/replication tool surfaces, Focus2: Investigating the effects of mechanical size in multi-scale forming/replication, Focus 3: Continuum and grain-level plasticity and fracture modeling/simulation, and STT1 Demonstration. In STT2: Integrated material design, processing, and characterization for laser-based 3D printing of metallic structures, the SU team will be involved in Focus 2: Dynamics of SLM based 3D printing and optimized custom feedstock, Focus 3: Hierarchical modeling/simulation of laser based 3D printing processes, and STT2 demonstration. In the education, outreach, and workforce development aspect, the SU team will be involved in Workforce Development, Diversity, and Sustainability."
