Southern University Police Department provided new bulletproof vests by local law enforcement foundation
Southern University and A&M College has strengthened campus safety efforts with the donation of new bulletproof vests for the Southern University Police Department, ensuring officers are equipped with updated protective gear ahead of continued campus operations.
The vests were provided through a long-standing partnership with the Capital Area Law Enforcement Foundation and replace ballistic armor previously donated to the department five years ago, aligning with the typical life span of law enforcement body armor.
“These vests give officers confidence knowing they’re fully protected,” said Pat Englade, president of the Capital Area Law Enforcement Foundation. “It allows them to do their jobs and go home to their families.”
Approximately 20 vests were donated, providing each Southern University police officer with a new vest designed to be lighter, more comfortable and more protective than earlier models. The updated vests are capable of stopping rifle rounds and are intended to help officers safely respond to critical incidents while protecting students, faculty and staff.
In addition to firearm protection, the vests provide added safety in vehicle-related incidents, offering officers another layer of protection during traffic accidents and other emergencies.
“There’s no price you can put on someone’s life, but these vests are worth every penny,” Englade said.
Southern University officials expressed appreciation for the continued support, noting that the updated equipment plays a critical role in maintaining a safe campus environment.
