Southern University’s Human Jukebox awarded Key to the City after being named ESPN’s Band of the Year

Southern University and A&M College’s marching band, the Human Jukebox, received the Key to the City from East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sid Edwards in recognition of its national achievement as the 2025 ESPN Band of the Year.

The honor recognizes the band’s outstanding performance during ESPN’s national collegiate marching band competition in Atlanta, where Southern was selected among the top Division I programs in the country.

“The Human Jukebox represents excellence not only in music, but also in pride and tradition,” Edwards said. “This band has carried the name of Baton Rouge and Southern University onto the national stage with honor. Presenting the Key to the City is our way of recognizing the legacy of the Human Jukebox.”

The Southern University Marching Band continues to serve as an ambassador for the University, the City of Baton Rouge and the state of Louisiana. Known for its precision and drills, the Human Jukebox represents the highest standard of HBCU marching band tradition.

“Receiving the Key to the City is a major honor and not something given lightly,” said Kedric Taylor, director of bands. “It speaks to the level of work our students have put in and serves as recognition of their dedication, discipline and impact throughout the year.”

University leaders, band directors, students and alumni joined city officials for the presentation, celebrating a milestone that reflects years of dedication. The recognition marked a proud moment for the Southern University community and the Baton Rouge region, honoring a program that continues to make history and inspire generations.
