Mission and Program Objectives

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Southern University is to provide students with a high-quality education in at least four of the major disciplines of civil engineering - enabling them to practice globally and engage in advanced study - while making significant contributions to society.

Program Educational Objectives

To support the missions of the university and college, and to fulfill the mission of the department, program educational objectives (PEOs) guide the actions and activities, projects and programs of the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department. They are as follows:
Within a few years after graduation, graduates of the Civil Engineering (CE) Program will have realized the following:

  1. PEO-1 – Utilize innovative methods of analysis, including experimental, mathematical, and computational skills, to solve complex engineering problems and improve the lives and livelihoods through a successful career in civil engineering or other related fields
  2. PEO-2 – Become ethical and effective innovators, collaborators, leaders and practitioners in efforts to address diverse technical, business, and social challenges
  3. PEO-3 – Develop the skills pertinent to the design of civil engineering systems, to think creatively, and to communicate effectively, in a minimum of four of the following civil engineering areas: environmental, geotechnical, structures, transportation and water resources
