The Music Listening Center provides an environment for students, faculty and staff to listen to required classroom assignments, as well as various musical selections of their choice. The center is available for students, faculty, staff, Southern University alumni, and the general public. The collection was established in 1960 and offers more than 172 forms of music in five formats. There are over 12,500 albums, 1,100 cassettes 1500 musical CD’s, an impressive Jazz collection of 22,000 albums with a mixture of music videos, and over 900 musical scores from various artists. The Music Listening Center collection is included in the John B. Cade Library Online Catalog

Art work is as much a part of music as the songs themselves. Whether it is an album cover, a poster or CD jewel case cover, art work plays a great a role in setting the mood of the album as the music. The center has a vast collection of music artwork, from music posters to album covers, you can find a wide selection of some of music’s most popular and controversial art work
Equipment
The center is equipped for individual as well as group listening. There are sixteen individual carrels with personal controls in each. In addition, there are two classrooms adjacent to the central control room. The classrooms are provided to serve as joint music listening, instruction and small group activities. The rooms are soundproof and come equipped with two TASCAM 112 high fidelity stereo sound speakers located at the front of the room. Materials from the MLC must be used within the area. Unauthorized reproduction of any recording is prohibited by Federal Law.
