Dance Auditions

Auditions for admission into the Certificate of Dance and Minor in Dance Program for the 2024-2025 academic year will be held on the campus of Southern University A&M College in Hayden Hall Dance Room 12. Please complete the form below if you are interested in auditioning or learning more about the program. We look forward to hearing from you!

Prospective students wishing to audition for admission into the minor in dance program must complete the audition form located below. For more information, email program coordinator Roxi Victorian at Roxi.victorian@sus.edu.

What to Expect at the Audition?.

  1. Auditions will take place at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, specifically in the Frank Hayden Dance Studio—Room 12.

    The audition will assess candidates' technical and artistic aptitude, readiness, and potential for advanced training across various dance genres.

    Warm-up and Technique: The audition will commence with a comprehensive warm-up to evaluate your range of movement and proficiency in fundamental dance techniques, including ballet and jazz. You will then be asked to perform specific exercises emphasizing alignment, strength, flexibility, and musicality.

    Phrasing and Choreography: The audition will include multiple choreographic phrases to assess performance strengths, artistic expression, and creativity in movement. This will provide insight into your ability to interpret and embody dance across different genres.

    Individual Assessment: Following the audition, candidates will receive personalized feedback from faculty members, focusing on technique, artistry, and potential for growth. This assessment aims to guide candidates towards their next steps in artistic development.

    Post-Audition Process:

    Notification: Candidates will be notified of their audition results within 2 days. Accepted candidates will receive information on their acceptance status and subsequent steps in the process.

    Placement and Development Plan: Accepted students will meet with faculty to discuss placement within the program and create an individualized growth plan. This plan will outline class recommendations, skill enhancement strategies, and potential opportunities for performance and further academic pursuits in dance.

    Ongoing Development: As part of our expanding program, you will engage with a dynamic curriculum designed to nurture your development as a versatile dancer. This includes master classes, performance opportunities, interdisciplinary projects, and summer intensives. Regular evaluations will ensure personalized support for your ongoing success.

  2. After the Audition:

    • Notification: Within 2 days of the audition, you will receive notification regarding the results. All students will be informed of their acceptance status and next steps in the process.
    • Placement and Plan: Accepted students will meet with faculty to discuss their placement within the program and an individualized growth plan. This plan will outline the next steps for further training, including class recommendations, skill development, and potential opportunities for performance or further academic work in the arts.
    • Continued Development: As part of our growing program, you will have the chance to engage with a dynamic curriculum designed to foster your development as a dancer, including master class instruction, performance opportunities, interdisciplinary projects, and summer intensive placements. Regular assessments will ensure that you receive the personalized support needed to succeed.

Dress Code for Auditions:

Auditionees should wear form-fitting dancewear. It is recommended to wear a black or blue leotard or a black or blue fitted dance top, either black-, pink-, or flesh-colored tights, and/or black leggings or dance shorts. Dancers should wear flat ballet shoes or socks during the ballet portion of the audition, pointe shoes during the pointe portion (if applicable), and bare feet for jazz, modern, and improv. Hair is pulled back and neatly secured. Please refrain from wearing jewelry. If you do not own specific shoes for a particular technique, please go barefoot or wear socks.
