Dance Auditions
Southern University Dance Minor & Certificate in Dance Auditions
Auditions for admission into the Southern University Dance Minor and Certificate in Dance Program will be held on the campus of Southern University and A&M College in the Frank Hayden Hall Dance Studio (Room 12).
Students interested in auditioning or learning more about the program should complete the audition registration form below. We welcome dancers from a variety of movement backgrounds and look forward to meeting prospective students interested in pursuing dance training, performance, and creative scholarship at Southern University.
Fall 2026 Auditions
To accommodate new and returning student move-in schedules, the Dance Minor will offer two fall audition opportunities.
Fall Audition Registration Deadline
August 13, 2026
Current Dance Minors are encouraged to attend both auditions if possible. Incoming freshmen, transfer students, and current Southern University students should attend the audition that best aligns with their move-in and arrival schedule.

Auditions for the Southern University Dance Minor

Audition Location & Format
Auditions take place at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, inside the Frank Hayden Dance Studio (Room 12).
The audition assesses each candidate’s technical and artistic readiness for collegiate-level training across multiple genres, with an emphasis on:

Technical foundation

Artistry and musicality
-
Physical readiness and expressive capacity
-
Potential for continued growth and performance participation
What to Expect
The audition follows a structured format:

Ballet

Modern
-
Diasporic Dance Practices
Faculty may also consider candidates for faculty repertory and Media Day opportunities during the audition process.
Dress Code & Requirements
Audition attire is all black.

No exposed midriffs (leotards preferred)

Ballet shoes required for the ballet portion

Hair must be pulled back neatly and securely

Please refrain from wearing jewelry
Video Auditions
Candidates who are unable to attend in person must provide a university-excused absence and submit a 2-minute video audition demonstrating ballet and modern technique.
Travel, Touring, & Performance Opportunities
Students interested in participating in travel and outside performance opportunities during the tour season must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 for eligibility.
After the Audition
Following the audition, faculty will review candidates holistically. Accepted students will receive notification of their status and next steps.
