Southern University Computing and Data Education (SU-CoDE) Program

WHAT IS SU-CODE PROGRAM?

The Department of Computer Science at the Southern University is establishing a Computing and Data Education (SU-CoDE) program to harness the role of computation and data science and prepare diverse professionals. Our goal is to train the students who can confront the challenges in computational and data-enabled science to be able to effectively analyze big data problems and make decisions based on their findings in computationally-driven world.

WHY SU-CODE PROGRAM IS IMPORTANT?

There is a shortage of almost 1.5 million professionals with analytical skills for big data problems in the United States and computing occupations will display the largest ten-year growth of any sector in Louisiana. As computing and data science makeup the largest occupation groups in STEM, acquiring computing skills is essential for innovation and competitiveness of our underserved students, placing them on a trajectory for high-potential employment and successful STEM career pathways.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN SU-CODE PROGRAM?

The SU-CoDE Program will implement a new educational pathway for CS and non-CS students to

  • Receive an Undergraduate Certificate in Computational Data Engineering and Science (SU-CoDES)
  • Participate in new computational and data science courses
  • Present their research projects in annual SU-CoDE symposia and reginal conferences
  • Access to computing and programming helpdesk
  • Secure financial support to complete capstone projects related to computing and data science
  • Join the SU-Women-CoDE initiatives and stay connected with related professional societies

WHO CAN ATTEND SU-CODE PROGRAM?

All the STEM students at the Southern University Baton Rouge campus are welcome to apply and join the SU-CoDE program. The STEM students will be selected and supported under the SU-CoDE program to work on domain-specific problems while receiving advices from the faculty in computer science and your major. The students who plan to complete their capstone projects using data science skills are welcome to participate in the SU-CoDE and apply for research stipends by completing the application form (here) and send it to Dr. Yaser Banadaki at yaser.banadaki@sus.edu.
