Purpose of the Office of the QEP

The purpose of the Office of the QEP is to determine, spear head and advance all components required to ensure the successful implementation, operation, and completion of Southern University's QEP: Improving Student Learning through Writing across the Curriculum: The WRITE Path to Success.

Southern University's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and Environment Learning Outcomes (ELOs)


The successful development, implementation, and completion of Southern University's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is an integral part of the University's reaffirmation process as required by its accrediting agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The QEP is a carefully designed and focused course of action that (1) addresses a well-defined issue related to student learning, and (2) aptly reflects the University's mission to impact student learning through the enhancement of the learning environment, producing graduates who are competent, informed and more productive citizens.  More specifically, the QEP addresses the core value and outcome of Southern University to produce graduates who are equipped to communicate effectively.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and Environment Learning Outcomes (ELOs)

SUBR QEP Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):

1.     Students will be able to write at or above the college level on general subjects as well as discipline specific content before graduating from SUBR.

1.1  By developing their writing through a series of writing enhanced courses in general education and the major discipline of study.

1.2  By developing a writing portfolio or their academic work that will be assessed at the end of the second semester of their junior year.

1.3  By accessing the campus writing center to improve any challenge areas they may have in writing.

1.4  By existing in a campus environment that emphasizes the importance of writing.

2.     Faculty will be able to improve writing instruction in an effort to improve student learning across the curriculum.

2.1  By taking advantage of professional development that supports the use of writing assignments in all disciplines, the creation and use of writing rubrics, and other resources designed to aid faculty in developing writing enhanced courses.

2.2  By assessing student writing and developing action plans based on student performance data.

3.     The SU Writing Center staff will be able to support and increase student writing performance.

3.1  By providing writing resources and writing skill development for campus constituency in the writing center

3.2  By providing support to faculty in the development of writing enhanced courses.

3.3  By providing campus lectures, seminars, and workshops on writing skills and strategies.

SUBR QEP Environmental Learning Outcomes (ELOs):

1.     The Writing Center will help students become more self-sufficient writers.

1.1  Develop baseline data on incoming freshman and track their writing development through second semester junior year portfolio and graduation

2.     The Writing Center will enable faculty utilization of writing in the improvement of student learning.

2.1 Track the number of faculty assisted with assignments, rubrics, and resource development.

2.2  Gather, analyze, and develop action plans based on the performance data of courses identified as writing enhanced.

3.     The Writing Center will assist in the development of writing enhanced courses in every degree-granting program within the University

3.1 Gather baseline information concerning writing enhanced courses and use it to track the progress in developing writing enhanced courses.

4.     The Writing Center will assist all university members who seek the help of the writing center with their writing challenges.

4.1  Keep a record of individuals who are assisted by the writing center. This record will include demographic information such as name, association with the University, purpose for assistance, achievement realized, etc.
