Southern employees launch new book drive for Ryan Elementary School

At the start of the holiday season in 2024, as a part of Employee Spirit Week, Southern University launched the “Lacumba Reads with Ryan” initiative to provide new books to Ryan Elementary School for their library. A month later, the goal has nearly been reached.

“The Lacumba Reads with Ryan Book Drive fosters our school-wide goal of improving reading skills for students at all levels, from early learners to advanced readers,” said Shanelle Fernandez-Mellion, principal at Ryan Elementary. “I wish I could capture the little shimmy dance our librarian, Mrs. VanDyke, does each time books arrive to the school. It is priceless. That joy and excitement is transferred to students!”

Fernandez-Mellion said one of the biggest impacts has been on students who choose to come to library for independent reading in lieu of recess. They also have more materials when community volunteers come in to read to students.

“We are excited about the Lacumba Reads with Ryan initiative and the opportunity to build stronger communities by investing in Ryan Elementary's library,” said Dawn Harris, director of human resources at Southern. “As members of this community, we recognize the importance of supporting and adding value to those around us. In partnership with the Baton Rouge Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., it is our goal to encourage a lasting love of reading and learning.”
