Southern University’s fall undergraduate enrollment continues upward trend

Southern University Baton Rouge today officially announced a 7 percent increase in first-time freshmen, totaling 1,328. This is the second year that the University has significantly increased its incoming freshman count, exceeding even the 20 percent increase attained during the fall 2017 semester. 

“This is exciting news for our university,” said Ray L. Belton, chancellor of the Baton Rouge campus and president of the Southern University System. “We have worked relentlessly to reverse several years of repetitive declines in student enrollment. It further illustrates the hard work occurring within our University community and indicative of the positive direction in which we are headed. We will continue gaining momentum.”

Additionally, Southern’s returning undergraduate student population is up 7 percent, which can be accredited to the university’s enhanced retention initiatives. The total amount of students reported for the fall 2018 semester is 6,617. This reflects students who have completed all registration and financial processes as of Sept. 21, 2018. 

Southern University Baton Rouge is the flagship of the Southern University System, the only system of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the nation. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
