College of Nursing and Allied Health professor recognized as Nursing Educator of the Year

Rosalynn Thyssen, an assistant professor in Southern University’s College of Nursing and Allied Health, was recently named Nurse Educator of the Year at the 2025 Nightingale Awards Gala, hosted by the Louisiana Nurses Foundation.
The Nightingale Awards honor outstanding contributions of nurses, nurse educators, administrators and health care institutions across Louisiana.
“To be recognized as Nurse Educator of the Year is not only a personal honor, but also a moment of representation for our students — especially those who look like us,” Thyssen said. “It affirms for them that excellence has no limits, and that their voices, their dreams and their contributions belong at every table.”
The award recognizes a nurse educator who demonstrates excellence in teaching, mentorship, scholarly research and leadership that advances nursing practice and education. Thyssen was one of nine nominees for the honor. She was recognized Aug. 23 during the awards ceremony at the L’Auberge Casino Hotel in Baton Rouge.
“This recognition carries a significance that extends far beyond me,” Thyssen said. “Southern University’s history reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of students like Denver Smith and Leonard Brown, whose lives were cut short while standing for justice and equality on our campus. Their legacy compels us to continue breaking barriers and creating opportunities in spaces where our presence has not always been welcomed.”
