Southern University Joins the Mardi Gras Fun

Southern University is proud to partner with BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo in celebrating Krewe de Zoo, a family-friendly Mardi Gras fundraising campaign that combines Carnival tradition with animal care, education, and conservation.
 
Now in its second year, Krewe de Zoo invites the campus community to join the celebration by purchasing festive Mardi Gras-themed hang tags featuring Lacumba III, Southern University’s beloved jaguar and a proud symbol of Jaguar Nation.
 

How It Works

By purchasing a hang tag, Jaguars can show their Southern pride while directly supporting the Zoo’s animal care and conservation efforts. Each tag represents community support and will be proudly displayed to showcase collective participation.
 
  • Hang Tag Price: $1
  • Yard Sign Price: $50
  • Proceeds Benefit: Animal care, education, and conservation programs at the Baton Rouge Zoo
  • Hang Tags will be displayed at the University bookstore and the BREC BR Zoo

The campaign culminates on Mardi Gras Day, when Lacumba III and other featured animals enjoy special Mardi Gras-themed enrichment activities and treats—giving the Southern University community an exciting and meaningful way to celebrate the season.
