Chancellor's message on recent incidents
Dear Southern University Family,
We are all grieving the tragic loss of student Caleb Wilson, a valued member of our university community who passed away last week after an unsanctioned off-campus fraternity event.
As we navigate this difficult time, Southern University remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering an environment conducive to growth and learning for all our students. Robust policies outlined in our Code of Conduct are in place to support that commitment, and we take violations very seriously.
We immediately issued a Cease-and-Desist Order to the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity. Every campus Greek organization is being informed that no additional membership intake can occur for, at minimum, the remainder of this academic year.
An internal investigation is currently underway, as well as Code of Conduct judiciary proceedings. Any individuals and organizations found to be in violation of our Code of Conduct will face prompt disciplinary sanctions.
We are fully and actively cooperating with the criminal investigation being conducted by the Baton Rouge Police Department and the District Attorney's office, including ongoing availability of University leadership and participation in law enforcement press conferences such as the one held this morning.
You are encouraged to take advantage of the 24/7 mental health services available to all Southern University students, faculty, and staff.
Separately, the University remains fully engaged with local authorities seeking the arrest of the suspect involved in an on-campus shooting on Sunday, March 2. As a reminder, external visitors are no longer allowed in dormitories on campus.
If you have information regarding this shooting case, contact the Southern University Police Department at 225-771-2770 or use the free Jags Safe app available on Apple and Android devices.
We will share updates as we are able and thank you for your understanding during this challenging time.
