Historic jaguar cub named "Lacumba III" at BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo

From BREC
BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo is thrilled to announce that its historic jaguar cub, the first born at the zoo in more than 20 years, has been named Lacumba III following overwhelming community support during a public naming contest.
A Monumental Milestone
The birth of Lacumba III represents a significant achievement for the zoo and global conservation efforts. One of only six jaguar cubs to survive nationwide in the past five years, her arrival underscores the critical need for conservation of this near-threatened species.
“This birth is not only a milestone for our zoo but a significant impact on the genetics of this extraordinary species,” said Jim Fleshman, zoo director at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. “By naming her Lacumba III, we celebrate a legacy of community, history, and shared commitment to wildlife conservation.”
The cub’s arrival furthers the zoo’s dedication to the Jaguar Species Survival Plan, a collaborative effort among accredited facilities of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums to ensure the well-being and preservation of jaguars for future generations.
Community-Driven Name Selection
The zoo initially invited the public to vote on the names Seti, Taiyari and Soona as options. However, a surprise write-in entry—Lacumba—captured the community’s imagination and advanced to a runoff against Seti, the two top votes. In the final round, Lacumba emerged as the overwhelming winner, solidifying its place as the name of the historic cub.
With a $1 donation per vote, supporters cast their ballots online, raising funds for the Baton Rouge Zoo Foundation. Proceeds will help support jaguar conservation, educational programs, and animal welfare at the zoo.
Honoring a Legacy
The name Lacumba carries a rich heritage linked to Louisiana’s Southern University, the first historically Black college and university (HBCU) to house a live exotic animal mascot. The original Lacumba, meaning “Heart of Africa,” was introduced in 1971, with her successor, Lacumba II, serving as mascot for more than a decade until 2004.
Naming the zoo’s jaguar cub Lacumba III honors this legacy while celebrating a new chapter in wildlife conservation.
On Exhibit in Spring 2025
Lacumba III will make her public debut at the Baton Rouge Zoo in spring 2025. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the rare and captivating cub in person, as the zoo continues its dedication to wildlife preservation and education.
“This is an extraordinary moment for the Baton Rouge Zoo,” said Fleshman. “The community’s passion and engagement reflect their commitment to protecting wildlife for generations to come.”
