Shaping Clean Energy Education: Southern University Launches EMACE-Inspires Summer Youth Camp

Southern University and A&M College is thrilled to announce the launch of the EMACE-Inspires Summer Youth Camp, an innovative program designed to ignite interest in clean energy and sustainability among middle and high school students in the North Baton Rouge/Scotlandville area. This week-long camp, running from June 24th to June 28th, offers a unique blend of hands-on activities, educational workshops, and real-world applications aimed at empowering the next generation of STEM leaders.

Program Highlights

Funded by the Department of Energy, the EMACE-Inspires program is part of the Energizing Minds through Advanced Clean Energy Education (EMACE) initiative, which aims to engage students in educational and research activities that support sustainable bioenergy, wind energy, solar energy, carbon capture, and decarbonization efforts. This camp represents the first step in our broader EMACE Partnership program which aims to create a first-of-its-kind cross-disciplinary clean energy curriculum. This program will develop a college-level curriculum with industry-recognized certification options and create a partnership pathway between Southern University and other academic institutions, national laboratories, industry, and the North Baton Rouge community.

Our goal is to inspire and develop the clean energy workforce of today and tomorrow, such that they have the knowledge and skills to drive sustainable solutions in their communities. This program is a testament to Southern University's commitment to fostering educational excellence and community engagement”.

Key Benefits of EMACE-Inspires

  • Educational Engagement: Students participate in hands-on activities aligned with Department of Energy zero-carbon emission topics.
  • Community Impact: Promotes clean energy awareness and education in an under-resourced area.
  • Career Pathways: Introduces students to potential careers in clean energy and sustainability.

Partnership and Support

The success of the EMACE-Inspires program is supported by strong partnerships with the Tapia Center at Rice University, the Baton Rouge North Economic Development District (BRNEDD), The ExxonMobil Pipeline Company, and local schools. These collaborations ensure that students receive a comprehensive and impactful educational experience.
