Department of Biological Sciences

Chair's Message

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Biological Sciences at Southern University, Baton Rouge, I would like to welcome you to our website. The Department of Biological Sciences is the second largest of ten departments in the College of Sciences at Southern University.  The department offers a single degree at the undergraduate level -- a Bachelor of Science in Biology.  It is totally committed to providing a superior program of study of the various aspects of life processes.

The Department of Biological Sciences recognizes excellence in student education as its first priority.  After completing the biological sciences core requirements, students can select a concentration in general biology, microbiology, zoology, or botany to fulfill the degree requirements. These concentrations prepare students for entry into graduate schools or professional programs such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, podiatry, or public health. The department also prepares graduates for employment opportunities in government, education, industry, and research laboratories.

The biological sciences curriculum has sufficient flexibility to afford students the opportunity to choose courses to pursue pre-professional areas such as pre?medicine, pre-pharmacy; pre-optometry, pre?veterinary medicine, pre?physician assistant, or sports medicine. Students can also choose courses to prepare them for entry into allied health programs such as physical therapy or medical technology. The department also offers a Master of Science degree in biology.

The biology department encourages student research by providing educational breadth and hands?on training by way of laboratory and field experiences of optimal quality.  It also strives to provide the best educational opportunities possible for students to attain their academic goals and for faculty to engage in scholarship in an atmosphere that encourages a free exchange of ideas.

All activities of the department are student centered.  In addition to academic activities, students are involved in social and community service activities through various honor societies such as Beta Kappa ChiBeta Beta Beta, and theNational Institute of Science.  The department fosters a nurturing and supportive environment in which everyone can work together successfully.

Thank you for your interest in our department.  I encourage you to contact us for any additional information.
