Drs. Brown, Spurlock chosen for Health Information Scholars program

Dr. Sandra Brown, professor and Dr. Wanda Spurlock, associate professor in the School of Nursing, were recently selected from a national pool of applicants for participation in the Health Information Technology Scholars (HITS) program.

The HITS program is supported by a 5 year, $1.5 million grant provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration's Bureau of Health Professions in partnership with the Office of Health Information Technology.  The project is administered by the University of Kansas School of Nursing in collaboration with the Schools of Nursing at the University of Colorado at Denver, Johns Hopkins University, and Indiana University, in partnership with the National League for Nursing.

The aim of this innovative technology project is to develop, implement, disseminate and sustain a faculty development collaborative initiative to integrate information technologies into nursing curriculum and improve the capacity of collegiate schools of nursing to educate students for the 21st century.

In addition to the use of creative, robust e-learning environments, emphasis is placed on technologies such as simulation, tele-health, and informatics. Drs. Brown and Spurlock will be attending special training and education at the University of Kansas, School of Nursing where they will interact with nursing faculty from colleges and universities across the United States.

Through participation as scholars, Dr. Brown and Dr. Spurlock will develop a network for innovative education, receive certificates of recognition, and will be awarded continuing education for the three-day workshop to be held in Kansas City, Kansas.
