The votes are in and Southern University's student section, M-9, has advanced to the semifinal round of the second annual Naismith Student Section of the Year Award contest.

A good basketball team, especially college squads, seem to get better when they hear the thunderous cheers of their fans. M-9, Southern University’s screaming student section has been giving SU women’s and men’s teams a boost for years, but now there is an extra oomph to cheering section.

Southern University commemorated the outstanding playing career of SU basketball alum and former NBA head coach Avery Johnson in a court naming ceremony on Feb. 2 in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Southern University grad Connie Baker, the Human Resource Director at RoyOMartin-Plywood, was recently recognized by a national business group with a “Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Award.”

Southern University’s Dr. Kamran Abdollahi has been selected as the National Committee Chair to the National Association of University Forest Resources Programs for 2013. Abdollahi is a professor and chair of SU’s Urban Forestry Program.
