Public Service Commissioner awards Southern $1.5M to continue energy efficiency improvements

During the March 23 meeting of the Southern University System Board of Supervisors, Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis announced an additional $1.5 million to continue to make energy efficiency improvements at Southern University and A&M College. The university was awarded $1.26 million in June 2023 to make improvements at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

With the recent funding:
The John B. Cade Library will receive $518,057 in lighting improvement throughout the building. These upgrades will enhance the learning environment by providing better quality light for students,  and by reducing the energy usage on campus by using LED and lighting control. It will also almost eliminate the maintenance burden of the current system.

The F.G. Clark Activity Center will receive $957,000 to pay for a central Building Automation System, This will allow facilities personnel to adjust the heating and cooling system to run at lower, more efficient speeds during lower cooling demand times. Projected energy savings to the university will be over $100,000 annually.
