Southern University to hold Fall 2020 Commencement on Dec. 11 at Mumford Stadium

More than 450 students are candidates for graduation at Southern University for the Fall 2020 semester. The university will hold an in-person commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 11 at noon in the A.W. Mumford Stadium on campus. Due to COVID-19, several measures will be taken, including social distancing of at least 6 feet in all areas, and requiring all participants and guests to wear face coverings/masks. Hand sanitizing stations will also be provided.

The speaker for the occasion is Kim Hunter Reed, Louisiana commissioner of higher education. A Southern University alumna, Reed is the only woman in the country currently serving as a state higher education lead who has led higher education in more than one state. She was recently recognized nationally with the 2020 Exceptional Leader Award by the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (SHEEO).

Working with the Louisiana Board of Regents, Reed is leading the state’s efforts to increase educational attainment by developing its talent base to result in a more prosperous Louisiana. To reach the state’s goal of doubling the number of credentials awarded by 2030, she focuses on collaborative efforts that increase access, equity and completion in line with the Regents’ talent imperative.

Leading this fall Class of 2020 as chief student marshal is Erysse Green of Antioch, California. She is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a 3.9 GPA.

The university is continuing to adhere to local and state COVID-19 mitigations, including venue capacity limits. Each graduate will receive four tickets for guests. These guest tickets must be shown to gain entry into the stadium. Participants and guests must also submit to having their temperature taken before entering the stadium.
