Southern becomes first La. HBCU to receive ‘Tree Campus’ designation

Southern University celebrated receiving the national Tree Campus recognition today with the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota by planting trees during a hands-on volunteer event today on the Baton Rouge campus.
Southern becomes the first historically black college in Louisiana to receive the designation and it is one of only five other HBCUs in the U.S. to be selected as a Tree Campus.

Southern University is continuing its effort to attract international students as it moves ahead with a program that could bring up to 30 Afro-Brazilian students to the Baton Rouge campus in the fall of 2015.
McCalope holds discussion with students on her new book

Author and SU grad Michelle McCalope discussed her new book “Good Job: A Guide to Pursuing Your Passion and Following Your Dreams,” on Thursday morning in the John B. Cade Library. McCalope, an award-winning journalist, also signed books for those in attendance.

The Southern University Museum of Art, (SUMA) will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Southern University with its exhibit, Southern Art: Reflections of History, Culture, and Lifestyle, featuring the works of Master Artist Don Cincone from Monroe, La.; Houston, Texas artist, Ted Ellis; and Monroe, La., artist Daryl Tripplett.
