JOB DESCRIPTIONS    

 

EDITOR IN CHIEF (Newspaper, Magazine & Yearbook): Responsible for all facets of newspaper production and editorial content; has final authority on content, layout, photography, artwork, and production for news, sports, A&E and editorial sections; exercises final authority over dismissal and suspension of all staff members; works with Student Media staff to monitor budget and handle payroll approvals; aid in training sessions as needed to help staff improve quality of work. The Student Publications Board, a public committee made up of staff, faculty and professionals appoint the editor. The editor then hires his or her staff.

MANAGING EDITOR (Newspaper, Magazine & Yearbook): In following the editor in chain of command, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the paper and yearbook, including supervising all sections, photography, editorial, copy editing and design staffs; executes the policies of the editor and may help set policies for all sections; exercises authority in making on-the-spot decisions for all sections.

NEWS EDITOR (Newspaper): Directly supervises the news staff, including editing stories and coaching on writing techniques; sets policies for reporters with editor's approval; enforces deadline policies; works with editor and managing editor to formulate long term story planning ideas; holds weekly meetings with writers to assign stories; responsible for communicating any design, photo or graphic ideas to the editors of those sections.

COPY EDITORS (Newspaper, Magazine & Yearbook):     Edit checking for grammar, spelling, and strength of leads all stories using AP (Associated Press) Style Manual and Digest Style techniques.  Edit all captions and headlines. Meet all deadlines and attend scheduled meetings. Must be available when the layout editor set final pages for production. Responsible for general editing of all copy for each issue.

OPINIONS EDITOR (Newspaper): Works directly for the editor; designs the Opinion/Viewpoints section each issue; edits all content for Opinion/Editorial pages, including letters to the editor; produces one opinion column each week; coordinates the editorial staff with the editor in chief to determine editorial opinions and write staff editorials.

SPORTS EDITOR (Newspaper): Enforces policy and supervises day-to-day operations of the sports section; assigns sports stories and completes deadlines within the constraints of the production schedule of the paper; design briefs and copy edits the sports section.

PHOTO EDITOR (Newspaper, Magazine & Yearbook):  Schedule, assign, staff and complete all photo assignments by deadlines mutually agreed upon by editor and section editors. Meet all deadlines and attend all scheduled meetings. Develop, print. scan and deliver processed photos by deadlines. Make a color and b/w scan of all art to be published.

ARTs & ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR (Newspaper): Enforces policy and supervises operations of weekly art, entertainment and lifestyle sections; assigns section feature stories and sets deadlines within the constraints of the production schedule of the paper; designs and copy edits the sections.

LAYOUT & DESIGN EDITOR (Newspaper, Yearbook & Magazine): Enforces policy and supervises operations for the design & layout of the publications using In Design. Must adhere to the standard newspaper, magazine, and yearbook layout rules but be creative.

ONLINE MANAGERS (Newspaper): Maintains and updates The Digest Web site (www.southerndigest.com) as needed. Must be available on Tuesday mornings.

GENERAL STAFF WRITERS (Newspaper, Yearbook & Magazine): Cover beats and breaking news; meet deadlines and minimum performance standards as set by editor and section editors. Not limited to writing for one section. Writing sections may cross over sections of the publication.
