Mission

The mission of the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics is to provide students with broad education in accounting, finance, and economics and advance the necessary skills and techniques in these fields to meet the rapidly changing demands of the global market place.

As part of the College of Business, the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics emphasizes innovative teaching, research, and professional service activities. It offers a four-year curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and in Finance

 

Learning Goals and Outcomes

  

Students completing the Accounting degree program will be:

o Effective Communicators: Write well-supported professional research documents; and, deliver professional speech or make presentation using adequate technology.

o Ethical Decision makers: Distinguish between ethical/legal and unethical/illegal situations in a business environment; and comprehend the concept of social and professional responsibilities.

o Familiar with global perspective: Identify opportunities of doing business in a borderless world; demonstrate awareness of cultural difference that impact accounting practices; and familiarize with international financial reporting standards.

o Possess effective disciplinary Competence: Demonstrate a basic knowledge of Accounting theories and practices; demonstrate an ability toanalyze, record, communicate and interpret historical and prospective financial and non-financial information.; demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of risk analysis and control evaluation in performing professional services; demonstrate an ability to use software to research tax and accounting issues; and, demonstrate an ability to prepare accounts in the global perspective.

o Critical Thinkers and Problem Solvers: be able to identify and define problem statements; seek information most relevant to the problem;  and, evaluate options, taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

 

Students completing the Finance degree program will be:

o Effective Communicators: Write well-supported financial analysis reports and other professional documents; and prepare and deliver a professional speech or make a presentation using adequate technology.

o Ethical Decision makers: Distinguish between ethical/legal and unethical/illegal situations in a business environment; and comprehend the concept of social responsibility and be able to behave ethically and with integrity, both individually and as a member of a team.

o Familiar with global perspective: Comprehend cross-country cultural differences and how they affect the way people think, solve problems, value work and reward achievement; and, demonstrate awareness and knowledge in the field of international finance

o Critical Thinkers:  Identify and define problem statements; seek information and data most relevant to the problem; evaluate options, taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of each option, and the consequences of decisions

o Value Professional Responsibility: Prepare financial reports with objectivity, conciseness and clarity; describe the work performed and conclusions reached in a manner that enhances the reports usefulness; employ appropriate media in report preparation and presentation; and work with others demonstrating their professional and leadership skills.

o Knowledgeable in the Field of Finance: Develop a mastery of the fundamental principles and concepts in the field of finance; apply the basic knowledge of finance to interpret information and analyze the impact of potential actions; and acquire skills through technology-based learning modules;

o Self-motivated and Life Long Learner: Recognize the relationship of self to others and their environment; develop an understanding of the ways humans adapt to a diverse and changing global environment; and, value inputs and points of view of others and respond appropriately.
