Program Overview

Risk Management and Insurance is an applied program with solid ground in theory and applications. The program is designed to provide students with an educational experience focused on career skills in risk management and insurance services.  Through a major in Risk Management and Insurance students will understand risk management techniques and insurance coverage and be equipped with vital risk management tools for application to a wide variety of real-world situations and career pathing opportunities.

This program is an extension of existing Risk Management and Insurance concentration we already have in the Finance degree program. Four courses are part of the concentration: FINC 335B Fundamentals of Risk and Insurance; FINC 445B Life Insurance and Professional Financial Planning; FINC 446B Employee Benefits; and, FINC 447B Property and Liability Insurance. These courses, taught by faculty and industry professionals, attracted students from major service areas of our university.

This program has been developed in collaboration with Alliant Insurance Foundation, Spencer Educational Foundation as well as the Louisiana Department of Insurance. These organizations have been providing financial and technical support to develop a Risk Management and Insurance program in the College of Business.  The Louisiana Department of Insurance provided $430,000 in financial support to enhance and recruit students for the Risk Management and Insurance concentration. The Department of Insurance helped several of our students to get internship opportunities with major insurance companies. Together with the Department of Insurance, we held several workshops and training programs to develop interest in the program. In 2022, Alliant Insurance Foundation awarded a grant of $1,405,000 to the College of Business to develop a major in Risk Management and Insurance. This is a three-year grant award to develop a cohesive Risk Management and Insurance curriculum and for students’ recruitment, scholarships, marketing and promotion, and other activities. Spencer Educational Foundation is also providing technical support and guidance in all aspects of the creation and management of this program.
