What is the GRE?

The Graduate Record Examinations ® (GRE ® ) tests are taken by individuals who aspire to go to graduate schools of USA Universities. The GRE General Test, is now offered on the computer, as a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) which is tailored to your performance level and provides accurate information about your abilities using fewer test questions than traditional paper and pencil based tests. The test is designed to measure your verbal, quantitative, and analytical reasoning skills that have been developed over a long period of time and are not necessarily related to any particular topic or field of study. The paper and pencil based General Test has been discontinued in most locations around the world.

Who must take this exam?

Individuals who aspire to go to graduate schools of US Universities to pursue a Masters or a Doctorate in the Sciences or Humanities field need to take this exam.

How does the GRE CAT work?

The GRE General test is an adaptive test. For example, the first question is of average difficulty. If you answer this question correctly, then the next question is slightly tougher. If you do not manage to answer it correctly, the next question is slightly easier and so on. This means that different test takers will be given different questions. The selection of questions you will see is based on your responses to all previous questions, and because the CAT adjusts to your individual ability level, you will get few questions that are either too easy or too difficult for you.
