PURPOSE OF THE FEDERAL WORK STUDY PROGRAM
The purpose of the Federal Work Study (FWS) program is to provide part-time employment for undergraduate and/or graduate students who need extra income to help meet the costs of post secondary education. activities. To the maximum extent practicable, the Southern University will provide FWS jobs that complement and reinforce each student's educational program or career goals. As a Federally funded program, total compliance with regulations is essential for its continuation.
HOW STUDENTS APPLY FOR FEDERAL WORK STUDY
1. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) or the Renewal FAFSA by March 31st in order to be processed by the processor priority deadline.
2. If a student was awarded FWS one particular year does not mean they will automatically be awarded the next year.
HOW STUDENTS ARE AWARDED FEDERAL WORKSTUDY
1. The Financial Aid Advisor awards FWS when packaging students with Financial Aid based on the date their FAFSA was processed and the availability of funds at the time that the student is packaged.
2. If a student was awarded FWS one particular year that does not mean they will automatically be awarded the next year. This is why it is important for the student to meet the priority deadline dates established by the Financial Aid Department.
If Federal Work-Study is not listed on the student's award letter then he/she was not awarded Federal Work-Study.
Students who are not awarded work-study on their award letter may inquire at the Financial Aid Office to see if additional funds are available.
