Animal Sciences

The Animal Sciences at Southern University offers education and research for the safe, nutritious and economical production of animal food and fiber, and of animals for recreational purposes, without compromising the environment or jeopardizing the health and well-being of farm animals and farm communities. We provide educational leadership through high-quality courses, research and extension/outreach programs to enhance human capital and ensure that Louisiana producers and communities benefit from these.

We have a strong tradition of training outstanding students in animal science and related fields, and welcome prospective students who are interested in our programs and want to contribute to our mission. Animal Science majors learn from internationally recognized professors in all aspects of domestic animal biology: breeding, genetics, nutrition, physiology, growth, behavior, and management. Our research programs advance our understanding of animal biology and address local and global issues facing animal industries today. Our goals are to discover and develop new techniques and information to benefit animals, agriculture, and human health.

Why Animal Sciences?

The Animal Sciences major offers an opportunity to apply animal biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and other life sciences to the study of animal breeding and genetics, nutrition, physiology, growth, behavior, and management. The curriculum is extremely flexible and can be applied to a great variety of species, from farm animals and pets to laboratory animals and even some exotics.
