1. History and Characteristics
Southern University and A&M College is a historical black college in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Institution was chartered in 1880 and began serving twelve students in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1881. In 1914 Southern University relocated to the present site on Scott's Bluff overlooking the Mississippi River in the northern section of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The university is a land grant college and the flagship institution of the Southern University System. SUBR's service area is central Louisiana and is defined as regional by the Louisiana Board of Regents. The student population is two-thirds female, approximately 90% Black, and 85% resident of Louisiana. SUBR is a Historically Black University publicly supported, co-educational, university whose graduates compete globally in their respective professional fields. SUBR has a comprehensive offering of undergraduate, graduate and professional degree granting programs to meet the needs of its diverse learners. Admissions are open to students who have earned a high school diploma, 2.0 GPA, an ACT Composite score of 20 or SAT Composite score of 940. International students must have a 2.5 GPA, a minimum score of 500 on TOEFL or a score of 5 on the IELTS, and a minimum ACT English score of 18 or ACT math score of 19 (SAT critical reading score of 450 or SAT math score of 460).
