Southern University to launch WSUB radio station Friday

Beginning Aug. 1,  Southern University’s Department of Mass Communication will operate its own radio station, WSUB 106.1 LPFM “The Bluff.”

Made possible through a cooperative endeavor agreement between the Louisiana Community Development Capital Fund (CapFund) and Southern, the low-powered FM station will be operated by the Department of Mass Communication. Faculty, staff and students will lead the station’s day-to-day programming and operations. The station's immediate predecessor is WTQT, a long-running 24-hour gospel station.

"The Department of Mass Communication is so proud to lead the way in operating the university’s FCC regulated radio station," said Yolanda Campbell, interim chair of the Department. "I’m especially excited to see our students demonstrate how this hands-on training will prepare them for their careers in the industry. Radio has always been about community, and there’s no one more prepared than Southern to seize this amazing opportunity to be a voice for the Baton Rouge community in music and content creation."

WSUB will serve as a hands-on training ground for students interested in radio, podcasting and audio production. “The Bluff” aims to help students strengthen their voices, engage audiences and prepare for careers in media.

The 24-hour station’s programming will reflect the spirit of Southern by promoting cultural awareness, supporting local talent and delivering educational content. The musical format will offer be a blend of gospel, hip-hop, R&B and pop.

Campbell will serve as station manager. Nicolette Gordon, a Southern alumna and seasoned radio professional, will take on the role of operations manager. Long-time WTQT program director, Jammin Jacque Griffin will serve as WSUB’s program director.

A ceremonial transition will take place at WTQT headquarters on Friday, Aug. 1. WSUB will officially begin broadcasting at 12:01 a.m. that same day. As a tribute to WTQT’s legacy, gospel music will air throughout the first weekend. Regular WSUB programming will begin at 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 4.
