Distinguished professor named American Physical Society fellow; receives $40k grant for scholarships

Diola Bagayoko, Southern University System distinguished professor of physics, dean of the D. M. R. Spikes Honors College, and director of the Timbuktu Academy, has been inducted as a fellow to the American Physical Society. The organization cited Bagayoko this designation for "..improving undergraduate physics education for all students through curriculum development, program development and administrative leadership, and broadening participation in physics through the preparation and mentorship of numerous ethnic/racial minorities in physics". 
Southern University environmental toxicology professor inducted into prestigious academy

Southern University’s Rao Uppu, a James and Ruth Smith Endowed Professor of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in the College of Sciences and Engineering, was recently inducted as a Board Certified Environmental Scientist (BCES) into The American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES).

Always a special Homecoming tradition, the 88th Miss Southern University, Darby A. Smith, was crowned at her coronation this past Wednesday in the F.G. Clark Activity Center. The theme for this year’s coronation was “The Empire’s New Reign.”
State Rep. Ted James to lead Southern University's Homecoming parade

State Rep. Edward “Ted” James is the grand marshal for Southern University’s Homecoming parade. James is an alumnus of Southern University Baton Rouge and Southern University Law Center. A Baton Rouge native and McKinnley High School alumnus, James serves in the Louisiana House of Representatives for District 101 in East Baton Rouge Parish. He was first elected in 2011.
Southern University’s fall undergraduate enrollment continues upward trend

Southern University Baton Rouge today officially announced a 7 percent increase in first-time freshmen, totaling 1,328. This is the second year that the University has significantly increased its incoming freshman count, exceeding even the 20 percent increase attained during the fall 2017 semester.

SU Nelson Mandela College hosts celebrity bowling tournament

The Nelson Mandela College of Government and Social Sciences is set to host a Celebrity Bowling Tournament on September 14, 21, and 28 at Circle Bowl in Baton Rouge. Proceeds for the tournament go to help establish scholarships for the college. The featured celebrity is local radio personality, LaTangela Sherman.
