The Southern University System received a MERLOT Stewardship Award at the INNOVATE 2017 International Conference, co-sponsored by the Online Learning Consortium (OLC) and the Multimedia Educational Resources for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) global organization, April 5-7, 2017 in New Orleans.

Southern University is among several southern states and historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) partnering with the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (SHEEO) to increase the number of underrepresented male teachers. SHEEO was recently awarded a three-year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to fund Project Pipeline Repair: Restoring Minority Male Participation and Persistence in Educator Preparation Programs (Project PR). The project will engage state policy leaders, educator preparation programs at HBCUs, and partner schools to achieve goals and objectives of the $1.5 million award.

The Southern University School of Nursing and Allied Health’s Graduate Nursing Program was recently honored as the “2017 Nursing School of the Year, Graduate Degree Programs,” by the Louisiana Nurses Foundation, Saturday, April 4, 2017, at the annual Nightingale Awards Gala, the “Academy Awards” of Nursing and Healthcare.

Southern University Baton Rouge has revamped its Legacy Award to offer students of at least one parent who is a Southern graduate to receive a 100 percent out-of-state fee waiver instead of the 50 percent wavier previously provided.

Southern University Baton Rouge has collaborated with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), select land-grant HBCUs, and state agencies to develop the “1890’s Institutions Initiative” to forge global partnership to create the production of human capital in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and Mathematics (STEAM).

The National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) recently conferred upon Rao Uppu, the James and Ruth Endowed Professor of Environmental Toxicology in the College of Sciences and Engineering at Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR), its premier dual credential, Registered Environmental Health Specialist/ Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS).

Luria Young, Southern University Baton Rouge vice provost for academic affairs, was elected to serve as the president-elect for the Conference of Louisiana Colleges and Universities (CLCU) during the organization’s 78th annual meeting April 6, 2017, at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches.

D.M.R. Spikes Honors College students make presentations at LCHC annual meeting Della Netter-Perkins, a long-time counselor and instructor in the Dolores Margaret Richard Spikes (D.M.R. Spikes) Honors College at Southern University Baton Rouge, was elected president of the Louisiana Collegiate Honors Council (LCHC) during the group’s 2017 annual meeting, March 18, hosted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
