A long-time Baton Rouge business law professor and a SUNO Student Support Services director were awarded the first "Above and Beyond” Award presented by the Southern University Board of Supervisors during its regular monthly meeting February 17, 2017.

“Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) were founded to promote Black excellence and brilliance, and each reigning beauty was elected by her peers and/or school officials to represent those standards for her institution of higher learning,” stated on Ebony.com referencing the HBCU Campus Queens campaign.

Southern University System executive vice president and provost M. Christopher Brown II, has been selected as a new member of the United States Army War College’s 63rd annual National Security Seminar (NSS), June 5-8, 2017.

Luria Young, vice provost for academic affairs, particpated in a National Science Foundation (NSF) event on Capitol Hill, “The Arc of Science: Research to Results,” along with Joseph Giaime, head of Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) Livingston, and two SU graduates and docents.

Three Southern University Baton Rouge professors were among 10 honorees to receive a STEM Innovation Award at the Becoming Everything You Are (BEYA) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Global Competitiveness Conference in Washington, D.C., at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. The conference, held February 9-11, 2017, included hundreds of high school students, thousands of college students and professional engineers and scientists from industry, universities, and government.

The Southern University Honda Campus All Star Challenge Quiz Bowl Team competed against nine teams from other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s), February 4, 2017, at Prairie View and A&M University. This event was the National Qualifying Tournament for the 2017 Honda National Competition.

Southern University and A&M College is hosting the 74th Joint Annual Meeting of Beta Kappa Chi (BKX) Scientific Honor Society and the National Institute of Science (NIS), March 15-18, at the Renaissance Baton Rouge Hotel located at 7000 Bluebonnet Boulevard. The theme of the 2017 conference is “Utilizing Innovative STEM Research to Address Today’s Current Global Challenges.”

Cheryl Taylor, chairperson, Graduate Nursing Programs, and director, Office of Nursing Research, SU School of Nursing and Allied Health, was recently selected as an ambassador for the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR).

Trudy Williams, assistant professor, Southern University School of Nursing and Allied Health was recently elected as the vice president of the Baton Rouge District Nurses Association (BRDNA).

Wanda Spurlock, professor, School of Nursing and Allied Health, Southern University Baton Rouge, received the National Black Nurses Association’s (NBNA) Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was presented to Spurlock by NBNA Acadiana Chapter, Saturday, January 14, 2017, in conjunction with the organization’s President’s Scholarship Gala held at the Ramada Inn Convention Center in Lafayette.
