English Scholarships

The Southern University English program has a long tradition of honoring outstanding English majors. The English Scholarship Committee selects the recipients of the following awards based on academic performance in English classes, cumulative grade point average, writing ability, and various other factors:

  • Thoppil Memorial Scholarship in English, a $500 renewable award established by Professors Mary K. Joseph and Erat Joseph
  • The Dorothy Willis Newman Memorial Award, $300, established to honor the late Mrs. Newman, a long-time English faculty member;
  • English Departmental Awards, $200 each, given to up to five English majors;
  • Freshman English Major Scholarship, $300, designated for an incoming freshman English major of outstanding ability and renewable for the sophomore year;

Academic Honors Day

Most of the English scholarship recipients are announced each April at the university’s Academic Honors Day Awards Program. Students, parents, faculty, and administrators in academic regalia attend this ceremonious event which acknowledges student excellence, from listing on the honor roll to the prestigious Chancellor’s Award.
