Integrated Student Teaching, Advising, Retention and Learning Center

The School of Nursing is one of the academic units at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge (SUBR) which has an Integrated Student Teaching, Advising, Retention and Learning Center (I-STAR-LC).  The overarching objective of I-STAR-LC is to increase student retention, graduation rates and preparation for workforce demands. An added benefit of the I-STAR-LC is an institutionalized “Makerspace” populated with on-demand digitized tutorials that can be accessed anytime, anywhere.   The goal is to increase the competitiveness of SUBR academic operations and its graduates. The coalescing of actions (student advising, mentoring, tutoring, research, data collection and analysis) serves to enhance institutional effectiveness. The rigorous implementation of a research-based approach to student advisement and tutoring in each of the academic college’s I-STAR-LC provides a collaborative learning environment that is expected to generate significant improvement in student performance and achievement.

The I-STAR-LC will address the issue of undergraduate student, particularly underrepresented minority students who enter college, but are not academically prepared to succeed in college programs.  The I-STAR-LC will provide students with the benefits of individualized counseling, remediation, advising, mentoring, face-to-face tutoring and access to digitized tutorials.

The I-STAR-LC is located on the 3rd floor in the School of Nursing and is projected to be fully operational by the end of the Spring 2023 semester.
