Dance Auditions

Auditions for admission into the Certificate of Dance and Minor in Dance Program for the 2024-2025 academic year will be held on the campus of Southern University A&M College in Hayden Hall Dance Room 12. Please complete the form below if you are interested in auditioning or learning more about the program. We look forward to hearing from you!

Audition Date: The auditions are held twice a year. 

Fall Audition Registration Deadline. Passed

Spring Audition Registration Deadline. January 18th, 5:00 pm

SPRING AUDITION DATE: Thursday, January 16, 2025, 5:00-7:00 pm

Prospective students wishing to audition for admission into the Certificate in Dance or Minor in Dance programs must complete the Audition Form located below. For more information, email Program Coordinator Roxi Victorian at Roxi.victorian@sus.edu.

What to Expect at the Audition?

  1. Audition will occur on the campus of Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA.In the Frank Hayden Dance Studio—Room 12.
  2. The audition will assess the auditionees’ technical and artistic aptitude, readiness, and potential for the next level of training.
  3. Warm-up and Technique: The audition will begin with a thorough warm-up to assess your range of movement and understanding of basic ballet technique. You will then be asked to perform specific ballet exercises, focusing on alignment, strength, flexibility, and musicality.
  4. Adagio and Allegro: You will be asked to demonstrate an adagio (slow) and allegro (fast) combination to highlight your technical precision, ability to execute movements, and performance quality.
  5. Improv or Choreography: A portion of the audition may include a short improvisation or the performance of set choreography to gauge your artistic expression and ability to work with creative movement.
  6. Individual Assessment: Expect one-on-one feedback from faculty members who will assess your technique, artistry, and overall potential for growth.

     

    After the Audition:

    • Notification: Within 2 days of the audition, you will receive notification regarding the results. All students will be informed of their acceptance status and next steps in the process.
    • Placement and Plan: Accepted students will meet with faculty to discuss their placement within the program and an individualized growth plan. This plan will outline the next steps for further training, including class recommendations, skill development, and potential opportunities for performance or further academic work in the arts.
    • Continued Development: As part of our growing program, you will have the chance to engage with a dynamic curriculum designed to foster your development as a dancer, including master class instruction, performance opportunities, interdisciplinary projects, and summer intensive placements. Regular assessments will ensure that you receive the personalized support needed to succeed.

Dress Code for Auditions:

Auditionees should wear form-fitting dancewear. It is recommended to wear a black or blue leotard or a black or blue fitted dance top, either black-, pink-, or flesh-colored tights, and/or black leggings or dance shorts. Dancers should wear flat ballet shoes during the ballet portion of the audition, pointe shoes during the pointe portion (if applicable); barefoot for the modern and improvisation portions, and wear jazz shoes for the jazz portion. Please ensure your hair is pulled back and neatly secured, and please refrain from wearing jewelry. If you do not own specific shoes for a particular technique, please go barefoot or wear socks.
