Dance Minor Curriculum Guide

Total Credit Hours Required: 18

The Dance Minor provides students with a comprehensive foundation in dance technique, performance, choreography, history, and pedagogy. Through coursework and performance opportunities, students develop technical proficiency, artistic expression, cultural awareness, and practical experience in dance as both an art form and a field of study.

The Dance Minor requires 18 credit hours of DANC coursework distributed across required technique courses, prescribed electives, and dance electives.

Required Technique Courses

(8 Credit Hours Required)

Students must successfully complete the following foundational technique courses:

DANC 101 – Ballet I 2
DANC 102 – Modern I 2
DANC 103 – Jazz I 2
DANC 106 – Dances of the African Diaspora I 2

Placement and Prerequisites

Students must satisfy all course prerequisites before registering for advanced coursework. Students with previous dance training and intermediate-to-advanced experience may audition for placement and, when appropriate, receive permission to place out of introductory-level technique courses.

Prescribed Electives

(6 Credit Hours Required)

All Dance Minors are required to complete:

  • DANC 404 – Black Dance in America (3 credit hours)

In addition, students must complete one (1) of the following courses:

  • DANC 200 – Dance Appreciation (3 credit hours)

  • DANC 300 – Dance Composition I (3 credit hours)

  • DANC 310 – Anatomy of the Body for Dance (3 credit hours)

  • DANC 311 – Dance Composition II (3 credit hours)

  • DANC 402 – Dance Ensemble (3 credit hours)

  • DANC 403 – Introduction to Teaching Dance: Dance Pedagogy for a Diverse World (3 credit hours)

Course selections should be made in consultation with the program coordinator or dance minor advisor.

Dance Electives

Students must complete two (2) of the following courses:

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Dance Minor, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate foundational technical proficiency in multiple dance genres.

  • Apply artistic, cultural, and historical knowledge to dance performance and analysis.

  • Engage in creative and choreographic processes.

  • Communicate effectively through movement and performance.

  • Participate collaboratively in rehearsal, production, and performance settings.

  • Recognize the significance of dance as an artistic, cultural, and scholarly discipline.

Performance and Professional Development Opportunities

Dance Minors are encouraged to participate in:

  • Southern University Dance Ensemble

  • Faculty and student choreography showcases

  • Mainstage dance concerts

  • Community engagement performances

  • Media Day and promotional projects

  • Regional and national performance opportunities

These experiences provide students with opportunities to strengthen their artistic practice, build professional skills, and engage with the broader dance community.
