Dr. Lidiya Dubytska is an Associate Professor of Biology at the Southern University-Baton Rouge (SUBR).
Dr. Dubytska received an MS degree from the Department of Biochemistry, Ivan Franko State University of L'viv, Ukraine. The main emphasis of her research was to study the influence of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) in the contraction of collagen gels by the fibroblast line, NIH-3T3. She completed her Ph.D. in 2003 from the Institute of Cell Biology and Genetic Engineering of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, Kiev, Ukraine in Molecular Genetics. Her research focused on the construction of a strain of Streptomyces peucetius subsp. Caesius ACC27952-2 that produced anticancer drags daunorubicin and doxorubicin. During this time, her work resulted in nine peer-reviewed original research articles and four presentations at the Symposia. She received prize of National Academy Science of Ukraine for the best presentation at the International Scientific Meeting held at Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics in 2002. She also patented the Method of obtaining strains of Streptomyces peucetius subsp. caesius ATCC 27952 with elevated synthesis of doxorubicin and capability of converting daunorubicin to doxorubicin. After completing her Ph.D she was accepted as an Assistant Professor to teach molecular biology and parasitology to medical students in Ivano-Frankivsk State Medical Academy (Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine). In 2003, she accepted a Postdoctoral position at the New York Medical College, Valhalla, NY. And was soon promoted to Postdoctoral Research Associate at New York Medical College. She was also awarded with permanent resident cart on National interest sponsored by NYMC. During this time, she published 2 prereview articles.
For 6 years, she worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate first and then as Research Assistant Professor. Her research focused on bacterial genome and plasmids sequence, characterization of atypical plasmids of E. ictaluri from Asia, identification and characteristic of T3SS effectors of E.ictaluri, modulation of host cell organelle trafficking by E. ictaluri, detection of host cell protein targets for T3SS effectors and the innate immune response to E. ictaluri. During this time, she was able to publish 6 peer-reviewed original articles and eleven abstracts. 2 complete bacterial genomes and multiple plasmids was completed, annotated and submitted to a database. During this time, she also received a CEIDER support fund grant for using department facilities and a local LSU grant (Proposal for LSU/SVM USDA 1433 funds) as a Co-PI.
Dr. Dubytska joined SUBR in 2017 as an Associate Professor and create new direction in SUBR research related to microbiology, pathogen host interaction and host immune response. During first year of her appointment she resided Pilot LBRN grant. She published 2 peer-reviewed original articles and present her work on 2 scientific meetings. Her student was placed second in biology undergraduate poster presentation. In addition, she thought graduate and undergraduate level students in two prominent universities in Ukraine: Ivan Franko L’viv State University and Ivan-Frankivsk State Medical Academy. And doctorate students at LSU. In total she punished over 50 original research articles.
Virulence is a complex trait that is usually multifactorial. Evolutionary selected systems of virulence gene regulation allow coordinated regulation of gene expression based on the temporal and special requirements of host niches. Global regulation of virulence genes is a common strategy of bacterial pathogens to overcome the complexity of innate and acquire host defenses. Coordinated expression of virulence genes can be achieved through multiple mechanisms. In addition to clustering genes in operons that are transcribed into policistronic messages from a single promoter, such as pathogenicity islands of Type three secretion system (T3SS) in many bacteria, there are several other global regulatory mechanisms that lead to coordinated regulation of expression of independent virulent genes and operons. These include alternative sigma factors, chromosomally encoded proteins like histone-like H-NS that bind to DNA and regulate gene expression, regulatory cascades, two-component systems to transduce signals from the bacterial envelop, quorum sensing, and the stringent response.
My overarching research interest is in the mechanisms associated with virulence of bacterial pathogens and for the development of strategies for protection and treatments against these pathogens. Deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms of virulence can be effectively converted to practical use for disease control. A better understanding of the role of bacterial virulence genes and toxins that are delivered to host cells and knowledge of host immune/inflammatory response is critical for development of better intervention strategies. Finally, an in-depth knowledge of bacterial pathogenesis will allow intelligent selection of a specific gene or a combination of genes as candidates for mutagenesis for vaccine development.
