The Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC)
Introducing Engineering Through Coounity Outreach at CTEC
The Computer Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) is committed to expanding access to STEM education and increasing awareness of engineering opportunities among K–12 students. Through partnerships with local schools and educational organizations, the CERL team regularly conducts outreach activities that introduce students to the exciting and diverse fields of engineering and technology.
These outreach initiatives are centered on hands-on learning experiences, allowing students to interact directly with engineering projects, demonstrations, and emerging technologies. By exploring areas such as electrical engineering, computer engineering, robotics, embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems, students gain a better understanding of how engineering concepts are applied to solve real-world challenges.
A unique aspect of CERL's outreach program is the involvement of undergraduate and graduate student mentors, who share their experiences and demonstrate how classroom knowledge can be transformed into innovative projects and meaningful careers. This peer-to-peer engagement helps younger students envision themselves pursuing higher education and careers in STEM fields.
Through these activities, CERL seeks to educate, inspire, and empower the next generation of engineers and technology leaders. By providing early exposure to engineering disciplines and creating engaging learning experiences, the laboratory helps strengthen the STEM pipeline, promote diversity in engineering, and foster long-term interest in science and technology.
The following sections highlight some of CERL's outreach visits and community engagement activities that have made a positive impact on students, teachers, and schools throughout the region.
