Sandra Chaisson Brown, professor, College of Nursing and Allied Health, was recently inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. The induction was held in at the Marriott Marquis hotel in Washington, DC, October 7, 2017, in conjunction with the 2017 Transforming Health, Driving Policy Conference.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 2017 to Rainer Weiss (LIGO/Virgo Collaboration), Barry C. Barish (LIGO/Virgo Collaboration), and Kip S. Thorne (LIGO/Virgo Collaboration), "for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves."

Student population is expanding at Southern University Baton Rouge. In particular, for the first time in several years, the University experienced significant growth in important sectors this fall.

Southern University has recently become a Silver member with America Makes, and the first HBCU to partner with the nation’s leading and collaborative partner in additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing (3DP) technology research, discovery, creation, and innovation. Endowed Professor Victor Mbarika of Southern University’s International Center for Information Technology and Development and College of Business was recently appointed as Chair for the Advisory Board of the Emerging Young Entrepreneurs in Africa (EYE Africa).

Southern University’s Center for Next Generation Multifunctional Composites was recently awarded a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF)for the next phase of its project “CREST Center for Next Generation Multifunctional Composites (NextGen Composites Phase II).
