Freshman Seminar
Freshman Seminar at Southern University and A&M College introduce first time freshman into our academic community and engage them in the process of scholarly inquiry. This course is a required, one-credit course for first year students. Freshman Seminar and other first year experience initiatives exist to implement a successful transition for first-year students at Southern University and Agricultural &Mechanical College. Furthermore, this class establishes the foundation for gaining knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for academic success on The Bluff and beyond. This course meets once per week for 50 minutes, throughout the semester.

Coming to a new place can be difficult, but First and Second Year Experience Peer Mentor Champions (PMCs) are here to make your transition to Southern University and A&M College easier than you could have imagined! Peer mentors are here to help!
Peer Mentor Champions
University College Peer Mentor Champions model appropriate behavior both inside and outside of the classroom, give spontaneous feedback and assist first year, second year and first time transfer students experience a seamless transition to the university.
JAG 365 New Student Orientation
Orientation programs are designed to welcome new students, parents, and families to the Southern University community. Specifically, carefully planned orientation sessions offer a range of perspectives on life at Southern University, in addition to providing you with resources and information that will be helpful to students, parents, and families during the first few months of the university experience.
Emerging JAGS
Southern University’s Emerging Jags program is designed to inspire students to make the most of their first year on the bluff and develop a proactive approach to learning and understanding their educational options and career opportunities. In addition participants are encouraged to set their sights on a college degree from one of our six premier colleges which include, College of Agriculture and Family and Consumer Sciences, College of Business, Nelson Mandela College of Government and Social Sciences, College of Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies,
College of Nursing and Allied Health, and College of Sciences and Engineering. #ThereIsGreatnessInYou
Academic Advising
University College is a centralized advising center for students enrolled as new freshman, continuing students, and transfer students who have below 31 earned credit hours. UC advisors serve as guides for navigating academic choices, aid students in planning and achieving their goals, and provide immediate and necessary support to ensure academic success.
The primary advising goals of UC are as follows:
• Provide accurate information regarding institutional policies and procedures
• Assist students in self-understanding and self-acceptance
• Assist students in considering their life goals
• Assist students in developing an educational plan consistent with their life goals and objectives
• Assist students in developing decision-making skills
• Refer students to institutional or community support services
• Assist students in evaluating progress toward established goals
• Provide information about students to institution, college, departments, etc.
Tutoring
The University offers free and friendly academic tutoring to Southern University students seeking to improve or maintain their knowledge base in freshman, sophomore, and some junior and senior level courses. Our centers offer brand new computers, plenty of study space and tutors whom pride themselves on being friendly, knowledgeable, and experienced. Come by for help in being a successful student.
Tutoring is a support service to ensure understanding of course material when students have gone to class. Tutoring is designed to reinforce information to students, not teach new information.

Your username is your SUBR email address. Your password is your U number
Select your tutor and schedule an online session
You will be able to see your tutor via video and they will also be able to share their screen with you so you can see how problems are worked out.
In - Person is available by appointment.
