Chairman's Welcome

It is my great honor and privilege to welcome you to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Southern University and A&M College. Our department has a proud history, a vibrant present, and a bright future. I invite you to explore our website, where you will find information about our academic programs, faculty expertise, student opportunities, and our collective vision for excellence.

Southern University’s Mechanical Engineering Department is housed in the state-of-the-art Pinchback Engineering Building, a multi-million-dollar education and research facility on the Baton Rouge campus. Since its founding in 1956, the department has produced graduates who have gone on to make significant contributions in industry, academia, and government. We build upon this strong foundation while embracing new challenges and opportunities in engineering innovation.

As Interim Chair, I bring more than three decades of academic and professional experience in engineering education, leadership, and student success. I have dedicated my career to preparing students for real-world engineering challenges through dynamic instruction, hands-on laboratory experiences, and close engagement with students both inside and outside the classroom. My vision for the Mechanical Engineering Department is rooted in three priorities:

1. Retention and Graduation: We are committed to supporting our students at every stage of their academic journey. From freshman orientation to senior capstone design, our goal is to retain students and see them through to graduation with the skills, confidence, and character to excel in their careers.

2. Academic Excellence and Student Development: We emphasize high standards of teaching, learning, and mentoring. Our faculty provide rigorous instruction, timely guidance, and access to resources that ensure student growth and readiness for professional success.

3. Community and Professional Impact: We serve not only our students but also our alumni, industry partners, and the broader community. Whether through mentoring, outreach, or collaboration, we aim to prepare graduates who are not only technically proficient but also ethical, responsible, and service-oriented professionals.

This website is designed to CONNECT you with every aspect of our department:

- Prospective Students: Learn why Mechanical Engineering is one of the most versatile, rewarding, and impactful career paths.

- Current Students: Access resources that help you thrive academically and professionally, including advising, internships, research opportunities, and career development.

At Southern University, we believe our mission goes beyond producing engineers—we cultivate leaders prepared to solve the challenges of a changing world. Our department is committed to fostering diversity, innovation, and excellence in everything we do.
