Chairman's Welcome

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to our Mechanical Engineering website. We hope that you easily find the information that you need here.

We are excited about our Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department at Southern University.  Currently, we are housed in multi-million dollar state of the art engineering education and research facility (Pinchback Hall) on the Baton Rouge campus.  We build upon the great heritage of our past and are ever mindful of the opportunities created by the sacrifice, perseverance, and faithfulness of those who were here before us.  Founded in 1956, the ME Department has a rich history of accomplishments, and our tireless faculty, staff, and alumni have made tremendous contributions to society.  Our current students are filled with excitement and eagerness to complete their education and start their professional careers and carry the torch of service to mankind.  We are pleased to announce that 29 of our students have completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (B.S.M.E.) during the 2021-2022 academic year.  These graduates are highlighted on our Alumni page (see www.subr.edu/page/1337).

The purpose of this website is to CONNECT with you, a stakeholder in all that we do.  It will connect you to the academic programs that we offer.  It will also connect you to the other activities and opportunities associated with our department, such as our current research and development endeavors.  You will see that our heart is to stay on the cutting edge of technology and innovation, and we are very open to entrepreneurship and contracting opportunities.  Furthermore, the website will CONNECT (and serve) our:

  • - Prospective students with information that will help them with career decisions. Mechanical Engineering is one of the broadest, most challenging, and highest paid career disciplines.
  • - Current students to the information that they need to successfully navigate through our curriculum. They will be able to find resources from internships, career development, latest ME news, and much more to help them mature into well trained ME graduates.
  • - Alumni with the latest events and accomplishments of the department and its stakeholders. It will also instruct how they can give back to their department, such as by mentoring current students, providing feedback, etc.
  • - Community and decision makers with resources they need to understand, appreciate, and utilize the profession of mechanical engineering in their everyday lives.

As you can see, we believe that our future is bright, and we are ready to take the forefront in the service to you (our community).  We are here to cultivate awareness in our graduates of their duty to serve their clients and community with answers for our changing world.

If you have any questions or need more information, please feel free to contact us at our email addresses, by telephone, or postal address noted on our web site.
