Southern University Chief of Police Joycelyn Johnson was named the HBCU Law Enforcement Executives and Administrators’ (LEEA) Regional Director of the Year for Region 4 on July 18, 2017, at the LEEA Annual Conference in New Orleans.

For the second time in two years, the Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR) College of Nursing and Allied Health claimed a HBCU Award for “Best Nursing Program,” and Cheryl Taylor, chairperson, Graduate Nursing Programs, and director, Office of Nursing Research won the “Female Faculty Member of the Year,” honor, during an awards dinner, July 14, 2017, at the Gallup Building in Washington, D.C.

Southern University students travelled to Belize early this summer, May 14-June 4, for a three-week study abroad program through the SU Center for International Affairs and University Outreach, under the direction of Barbara Carpenter, dean and State Representative, and Kristan Gordon, assistant to the dean.

The Million Dollar March is a viral and direct mail fundraising campaign that endeavors to encourage alumni and friends to join together and secure philanthropic contributions for the campuses and departments of the Southern University and A&M College System.
The campaign begins January 1, 2017 and ends October 1, 2017.

Southern University Baton Rouge students recently traveled to Tokyo, Japan for an opportunity to interact and network with Japanese students from various universities in Tokyo. Through the First Year Experience's SU Leads program in collaboration with the Office of Dean of Students, and Criminal Justice department, nine students from an array of majors were able to travel abroad for two weeks and create a once in a lifetime experience.

The Southern University System has nominations in eight categories for the 2017 HBCU Awards. HBCU Digest, Friday, June 16, announced the finalists in 28 categories for the seventh installment of the national award ceremony that acknowledges and celebrates achievements at historically black colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Southern University, through the SU International Research Experiences for Students (SU-IRES), for the third year has a contingent of students in Kumasi, Ghana engaging in summer research. This year, the SU research team consists of eight students from various STEM disciplines, two mechanical engineering faculty, and two staff.

McGuire, the Southern University Baton Rouge James and Ruth Smith Endowed Professor of Physics, is now a co-author on the first three publications reporting the observations of binary black hole collisions via the direct detections of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).
SU College of Business set to host 4th Annual Economic Development Conference

The Southern University College of Business is hosting its Fourth Economic Development Administration (EDA) University Center Annual Conference entitled “Advancing Economic and Entrepreneurial Development in disaster Recovery: the Role of Talent, Innovation and Place in Building Community Resiliency.”
The conference will be held June 15-17 at the College of Business’ T.T. Allain Hall, Room 313 on Southern University’s campus. The registration cost is $25.
