Narrative:
Southern University and A&M College assigned responsibility for program coordination, as well as for curriculum development and review to faculty members academically qualified in their respective fields. Each degree program is listed in the University catalog and on the University Website. A list of the Board of Regents approved programs are listed in the following table. Each program has a person responsible who has the appropriate qualifications for that major. The SUBR Faculty Handbook articulates the policy requirements for hiring academic program coordinators, just as it does for deans and chairpersons. According to the Faculty Handbook, “The Program Leader is responsible for the curriculum development and review including, academic, and administrative affairs of the degree offering program (identified by a CIP code) including, academic, and administrative affairs of the degree offering program. The Program Leader reports to the Department Chair” (2.4.13). The job descriptions, responsibilities, and duties are delineated within the appropriate sections of the Faculty Handbook. Program coordinators, under the direction of department chairs and Deans, coordinate all academic degree programs defining what constitutes majors and concentrations. All program coordinators, department chairs, and deans are tenured members of the faculty who hold terminal degrees in the field or a closely related area.
Official academic credentials include official graduate transcripts that document the attainment of the appropriate terminal degree in the appropriate fields. Current curriculum vitae are maintained in the Deans’ offices and Academic Affairs to ensure that degree program coordinators are current and competent in curriculum coordination, development and review. The official repository of these documents of all academic leaders, inclusive of the program coordinators, department chairs, and deans, is the Office of Academic Affairs.
