Department of Educational Leadership

Master's in Educational Leadership

The mission of the Southern University A&M Educational Leadership Program is to engage candidates in a transformational process of systematic problem-solving and data-driven decision-making. The primary aim is to prepare candidates to meet the challenges of leading schools, organizations, communities, and people.?The Educational Leadership Program offers degree candidates the opportunity to become educational leaders in a variety of school settings, including, but not limited to, building-level administrators (K-12), teacher leaders, central office supervisors, and upper-level administrators.  In addition to the Master’s degree, the Department offers an Alternate Certification in Educational Leadership.

The Educational Leadership Program's goal is to produce principals and leaders who match the needs of school districts. The program is standard-driven and addresses guidelines and benchmarks articulated by the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC), Educational Leadership Consortium Council, Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), and Louisiana Standards for School Principals (LPS).

Graduates with degrees in education leadership have the skill set and knowledge to work in multiple fields with the degree or additional training.  Among those fields are: educational counselors, adult basic and secondary education, education teachers, directors, education administrators, self-enrichment education teachers, instructional coordinators, education administrators, and health educators.

Program Overview
The program is designed to produce leaders to fill school and district educational leadership positions (e.g., assistant principal, principal, parish or city supervisor of instruction, supervisor of truancy, special education supervisor, or comparable school/district leader positions). As part of the educational leadership structure, a teacher can become certified as a teacher leader.

The recruitment and selection process is designed to select the best possible candidates for the program. To accomplish this goal, a district Selection and Review Team will be established in each participating school district. These teams will be responsible for advertising, recruiting, and selecting candidates who demonstrate leadership skills and abilities that parallel Educational Leadership Constituent Council standards (ELCC), Southern Regional Educational Board (SREB) Critical Success Factors, and the Louisiana Standards for School Principals.

Internship and Graduation Requirements
The internship is a critical component of the program. Candidates must complete course-based field experiences during each registered course. Candidates enrolled in EDLD 595 (Internship) must complete additional hours of field experience before completing the program. Graduation requirements include attaining a 3.0 GPA and a passing score on the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA).
