Grants
A grant is a form of financial aid awarded to students based primarily on financial need. Like scholarships, grants do not require repayment (unless outlined when requirements for the grant are not met) and are often funded by the federal government, state agencies, or educational institutions.
Louisiana Geaux Teach Grant
The Geaux Teach scholarship program was established to provide scholarships to students who are enrolled in teacher preparation programs or alternate certification programs approved by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) at postsecondary education institutions within the state.
The maximum annual award is $5,000. Scholarship awards shall be applicable only to the cost of tuition, required fees, and textbooks and instructional materials required for the course of study. The award shall be used only after all other state or institutional financial aid and awards are applied and only for any remaining balance due for tuition, required fees, and textbooks and instructional materials required for the course of study.
What are the eligibility requirements?
- The student must be a United States citizen and if required, registered with the Selective Service.
- Be a Louisiana resident for at least two years prior to July 1 immediately preceding the academic year of enrollment.
- Have at least a 2.50 cumulative college grade point average.
- Be enrolled full time in an approved teacher preparation program or alternate certification program.

TEACH Grant
The TEACH Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete course work needed to begin a career in teaching.
A Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is different from other federal student grants because it requires you to agree to complete a teaching service obligation, and if you don't complete the service obligation, the TEACH Grant will be converted to a loan that you must repay, with interest.
Service Obligation
The teaching service requirement is set out in the Agreement to Serve or Repay. By signing the Agreement, you agree to:
(1) Serve as a full-time, highly-qualified teacher for four years at a school that serves low-income students;
(2) Teach in a high-need field; and
(3) Complete the four years within eight years of leaving school.
If you do not complete your teaching service obligation, the TEACH Grants you received will be converted to loans that you must repay with interest.
To be eligible for a TEACH Grant, you must:
- Meet the basic eligibility criteria for federal student aid;
- Complete the FAFSA® form;
- Be enrolled at a TEACH Grant participating school;
- Be in a TEACH-Grant-eligible program;
- Meet academic requirements (e.g., 75th percentile on a test or GPA ≥ 3.25);
- Complete TEACH Grant counseling each year;
- Sign the TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve or Repay.
